Fisherman's
Wharf is
the district stretching
from Pier 39, along the
Embarcadero to the Piers 41 and 43. What used to be
a landing dock for fishermen is now a highly touristic
area offering countless entertainment venues and seafood
restaurants. Ferry services departing from the piers
41 and 43, to Alcatraz, Sausalito or Tiburon guarantee
large numbers of visitors every day. Pier 39 holds a
special attraction since the 1989 earthquake: a
colony
of sea lions "moved in" here and has occupied
the pier ever since, attracting millions of people every
year who want to see the sea lions up close - it's not
that often you find these animals living so close to
humans, and they even seem to be quite content with
their location.
Pier 39 is a good starting point for a tour
of Fisherman's Wharf - just move west from here and
you'll come by the other piers, tourist attractions
like The Cannery and
Ghirardelli
Square (two former industrial
brick buildings now used as space for retailers and
restaurants) and countless restaurants offering excellent
seafood. Try a clam chowder in sourdough bread - a San
Francisco specialty you'll find in most restaurants
and even on take-out stands for a casual bite in between
- not to be missed!
