The Cosmopolitan Cafe represents
a nice example of the supper club culture: this elegant
mix of restaurant, bar and lounge definitely stands
out in the South of Market area. During the daytime,
it´s mostly peopled by lunch crowds from the neraby
offices, at night, especially on those nights with live
piano entertainment, there´s a somewhat more "cosmopolitan"
audience. The Cosmopolitan Cafe features two areas:
the lounge area with bar
and the actual restaurant
in which chef Steven Levine celebrates his ambitious
modern American cuisine. After several businesses failed
in the same location in recent years, the NYC-born Levine
has earned the Cosmopolitan
a place among the top restaurants in San Francisco with
creations such as his excellent sauteed goat cheese
gnocchi with chanterelles and Butternut Squash, his
"Surf and Turf" pepper seared filet of beef
and grilled lobster crisp on potato cake with green
peppercorn jus or the also popular sauteed dayboat sea
scallops with oxtail risotto, black trumpet mushrooms
and white truffle oil. The menu for lunch and dinner
offer almost the same selections, but we´d recommend
coming at night just because the atmosphere is nicer
and more intimate with soft piano sounds in the background.
