This
massive
complex
of buildings is certainly one of the most interesting
and beautiful sights Munich has to offer. For over 500
years, Bavarian rulers and aristocrats have resided
here and have continually expanded the complex, which
explains the colourful mixture of architectural styles
present here: from renaissance, baroque or rococo to
classicistic parts, it all combines into an impressive
residence. The many-cornered ensemble surrounds six
inner yards, the most beautiful one certainly being
the Brunnenhof with the large baroque fountain from
1610 and the bell tower. The decorative rooms and large
halls of the Residenz can be visited, and the many collections
of precious art, china, the colossal historic paintings
and the old furniture paint a vivid picture of 500 years
of Bavarian history.
The treasury with its crowns, jewels and golden treasures
is especially fascinating as it holds one of the most
precious
collections
in the world,
both in a material and in a cultural sense. Besides
local art, there are ivory figurines from Asia, original
china from the middle ages and other interesting items.
The theatre is also worth a visit - one of the most
beautiful remaining rococo-theaters in Europe. In 1781,
it saw the premiere of Mozart's "Idomeneo"
and is used as an impressive backdrop for special events
until this day. For all who are interested in Bavarian
history, the Residenz is a must-see.
