An ensemble of world fame in the art scene - the two opposing buildings house some of the most important art collections of the world and are truly unique. An absolute must for art fans - the only question is what gallery to visit. For friends of medieval art, a visit to the Alte Pinakothek should be on the Munich itinerary because it displays not only one of the largest Rubens collections of the world, but an overwhelming overview of almost 500 years of European cultural history. More than 800 masterpieces by renowned painters like Frans Hals, Van Dyck, Dürer and Tizian, Italian masters of the renaissance like Raffael, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, Spanish greats like Velazquez or the Cretan- born El Greco, to make it short: everybody who had a lasting impact on European art in the last 500 years is present here.

The Neue Pinakothek houses modern art (paintings and sculptures) from the late 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
Names like Caspar David Friedrich, Van Gogh, Degas, Monet, Gauguin or Cezanne are on display here, also works of the late romantics and realism: Carl Spitzweg, Max Liebermann or Arnold Böcklin,
Delacroix, Manet or sculptures by Rodin.
Just as in the Alte Pinakothek, the intention is to present every important style or school of painting for the time span the museum covers, and the concept has proven equally successful here. A comprehensive overview of fine arts awaits the visitor, and it's wise to plan a few hours for a visit to either gallery. With the Pinakothek der Moderne, a spectacular new tract was opened for contemporary art from the beginning 20th century until today. On an exhibition space of more than 15.000 m², the Pinakothek der Moderne shows modern art from graphics to photography, sculptures to video art and more. Names like Max Beckmann, E.L.Kirchner, Gris, Braque, Chagall, Ernst, Dali, Miro, Magritte or Picasso speak for themselves - if you like art, from what time it may be, a visit to the Pinakotheken can only be recommended.
